My Philadelphia, My Future

Aniya Staley

I can’t say I love where I live if where I live isn’t loveable

At 10 o’clock the News comes on and there is nothing but death and destruction

A community without unity

A neighborhood without the neighborliness but more hood

There are good things about Philly

But I’m not a tourist, the good places aren’t what I search for

I’m a citizen

A person who wants a safe community

A person who wants to not end up dead on a street corner

A person who wants to see their neighborhood change for the better

I have a vision

A vision that involves parks without pieces of garbage

Coked up

Doped up

On a daily highly

Lingering around, can’t seem to be blown away by the wind

We really should clean up the trash too

A vision that involves seeing more children smiling

Not on the news from dying

Break News!

Gang activity, gone wrong 2-year-old shot dead near the scene

Is this what we’ve come to?

Guns are for protection

We wouldn’t need protection if everyone stopped shooting up blocks

Put away the glocks

49s

And Ak-47’s

If we did this then maybe our kids can live past the age of seven

This vision I have is not just for me but for everyone

I’m saying for us to realize

For us to recognize

And understand that we may not be here in a few years

In a few years, we may not be here

In a few years, we may not be here

In a few years, we may not be here

I can’t say I love where I live if where I live isn’t loveable

But I can change where I live to make it loveable
