Hollywood is Back? : The Ending of the Writers Strike

On May 2nd, more than 11,000 members of the Writers Guild of America (WGA) set out to go on strike for the first time since 2007. This brought an immediate halt to many movies and television shows such as Saturday Night Live, or other popular Late Nights shows (Jimmy Kimmel, Stephen Colbert).  For years, the strike had been brewing due to unfair pay and a recent rise of streaming and AI technology. However, 146 days later, on September 24th, the studio and writers reached a tentative agreement, ending the strike. 




Where is the Representation: The Oscar Race Problem

On March 12, the biggest names in the film industry will gather together at the Dolby Theatre, praying for their name to be enclosed in a legendary envelope and to receive the 13.5-inch tall, 9-pound gold statue, an Oscar. Considered one of the most iconic and respected awards season events, the Oscars have maintained a reputation for recognizing cinematic brilliance. However, marginalized groups have been excluded from the Oscars for far too long.



A Freshman Perspective on a New Student Selection Process

In the fall of 2021, chaos ensued amongst 8th graders and high school students in the School District of Philadelphia. In an effort to bolster equity and diversity within criteria-based magnet schools, the district altered the school selection process within all 21 of Philadelphia’s magnet high schools, which sparked controversy throughout the city.
