(10/05/23 4:36pm)

Every day, people around the world suffer from a lack of fresh and affordable food, and this is unfortunately not a problem that affects just a few of us. In fact, it is estimated that 3 billion people around the world today do not have access to healthy produce. The city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania has struggled with ‌food deserts—geographic areas, where residents have limited access to affordable, nutritious, and fresh food—for decades, particularly in its lower-income neighborhoods in North Philadelphia. In fact, more than 50% of residents in North Philadelphia live in a food desert and 25% of Philadelphia youth eat one or fewer daily servings of fruit or vegetables. Residents there have limited access to full-service grocery stores and fresh food retailers that provide options for healthy green produce. Instead, they often have to rely on convenience stores, fast-food restaurants, and other sources of low-nutrient, processed foods.
