The school district’s mayoral forum on March 21st started with candidates sharing their school experiences and closed with candidate Reverend Warren Bloom telling us to pray for the city. The forum, held inside the Parkway branch of the Free Library, featured eight mayoral candidates as they discussed their plans for the future of Philly schools.

For the last 14 years, Maria Quiñones-Sánchez has represented Philadelphia’s 7th district on the city council. As the first Puerto Rican woman elected, she has focused on finding solutions to economic justice, keeping families in their homes, and prioritizing land use innovation. In September, she was one of the first Democratic candidates to step down from City Council and announce her bid for Mayor of Philadelphia.
If you haven’t heard of Jeff Brown before, you’ve probably heard of his stores. Brown is the president and founder of the grocery store chains ShopRite and Fresh Grocer and is currently in the race to become the next mayor of Philadelphia.
Earning the most primary votes for city council since the 1980s, winning 56 out of Philadelphia’s 66 wards (in a field of 28 other Democrats), getting arrested for protesting for school funding in Harrisburg, and giving advice out on Queer Eye can all be accredited to former councilmember at-large Helen Gym.
A Phillies World Series win would have upended the city. Imagine the red, white, and blue confetti raining down Broad Street, the people miraculously climbing greased poles, and the crowds swarming city hall. Instead, we were treated with a devastating loss and victory just out of our grasp. I think Phillies fans deserved the win.

Once the largest and oldest refinery on the East Coast, the newly Bellweather District and its owners, HILCO, have new plans for the future of the property and Philadelphia as a whole.
With Oscar nominations out and everyone preparing for award season, you can’t help but notice the lack of excitement around the once famed Golden Globes. This is because, while the awards were still given out during a “ceremony”, it was not televised, and no celebrities nor nominees were in attendance. No red carpet, no host, no platform.
